Do or Don't: Dining Alone...

Ali and I were talking the other day about dining alone... would you or wouldn't you?  She has, I hadn't.  She said she actually enjoys it from time to time.  Me, I've always worried I would feel awkward or bored dining out alone so never have.  Until last week, that is!

My sweet friend Jen and I had made plans to meet for sushi on our lunch break.  I got there first, ordered some green tea and waited for her.  15 minutes passed so I decided to call her to make sure she was ok. No answer.  Me being the worrier, I started to get a little concerned.  Then about 2 minutes later she called back and said "OH MY GOSH, I completely forgot!".  She got called into an unexpected evaluation at work (which went well!) and our lunch date completely slipped her mind!  She felt horrible and must have apologized a thousand times.

But honestly, it actually ended up being nice and strangely liberating.  The peacefulness and solitude for an hour was really quite lovely!  So Jen, I suppose I should thank you for standing me up!  I was forced out of my comfort zone and ended up being pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

I'm curious... would you or wouldn't you dine alone?  Or have you?  Do tell!

OH I did this A LOT at work when I was at the office. Sometimes I just needed to NOT talk to anyone and enjoy good food. I like it.

My grandmother has often done that and I have always admired her for doing so. I have learned to like it. Just like learning to like going to the movies by yourself. I agree with you 100% it's VERY liberating! Awesome job and I hope you do it again soon! It gets easier and easier and soon you will enjoy it :-)

Yay! I'm excited for you :) I LOVE eating alone...not all the time, of course. I also enjoy going to movies alone sometimes. Maybe it brings out that independent woman in all of us? I think people are more likely to talk to you when you're alone (probably because they feel sorry for us), so it's a good way to meet new people while traveling. Whatever reason, go YOU!

I do it often, I don't mind at all. The only time it gets a little akward is at Mexican..."do you want another basket of chips?"

I go out by myself for lunch about once a week. I was completely caught off guard a few weeks ago at Panera when an older lady who was enjoying lunch with a group suddenly called over to me, "How's your tomato soup?" I guess she thought I might be lonely. But I enjoy the time to myself in the middle of a work day.

If I'm alone I typically take my food togo. Never have I sat in a restaurant alone. I think I'd be bored. Maybe if I had my laptop I could look busy lol. Props to stepping out of your comfort zone!

I feel exactly the same way. I feel like it would be boring and awkward. I should give it a try!

i have dined alone but it was when i lived in japan and i didn't feel awkward because there was one dish that i absolutely loved there and no one else thought it was as incredible as i thought it was so i went by myself and completely enjoyed it and went back several times while i lived there

I know they always do this on TV on shows like SITC and today women are supposed to be able to go to bars alone etc. But really I don't do it. I do go to the movies alone though.

I`ve dined alone a couple of times, but all of them were on some kind of airport while waiting for a flight. Once in Madrid, once in Münich and once in Copenhagen. Does that count?

I have dined alone and as long as I have something to read I am good. If I gotta stair at people then it's a big no!

I have not but I definitely would! It does make me sad when I see really old people eating alone though.... confession. But only the elderly - otherwise I'm all for it - and your lunch lookds delicious :)

I haven't...I've seen others doing it...but I usually get the food to go if I'm alone. I think it depends on how crowded the restaurant, I'd feel bad using a whole table for a person if the restaurant was packed and groups were waiting...

Love dining alone. I've become more appreciative of it since I became a mom.

Isn't is a funny sensation to just sit and eat solo! I used to do it all the time at the cafeteria in college but I'd usually distract myself with phone, studying, etc. I went to a movie a few months ago and felt a little weird cause I went to a sappy love movie. I sat in the back row with a crapload of candy and popcorn but I ended up loving that I did it alone!

I never dined alone until I traveled alone, and then I got comfortable with it pretty quickly! Now I don't feel weird at all if I have to grab a bite alone!

A definite "Do!". It's intimidating but can be relaxing too.

I have yet to be in the situation where I had to make the choice. I think if I had already ordered my food I'd probably stay and finish.. otherwise not so sure.

I would. allows me to think things out. I find solace in solitude sometimes.

I would if that's what I was eating! Looks delish! It probably wouldn't be my first choice, but I always have my little sidekick with me, so it's rarely an option!

I love dining alone! I think that since it requires a bit of confidence to do, it actually makes me FEEL confident doing so. As long as I don't think too hard about all the happy groups of people around me, I find it very relaxing, and I leave much happier.
